My Story...

We all have a story – a story of trials, tribulations, and transformations. Looking back at my life story, I would have never fathomed that I would be living the beautifully passionate life I am now as a wellness coach and yogiprenuer in Asia.

My humble beginnings…

As an Asian American, growing up in a low-income household in Brooklyn, NYC, wasn't easy. At the age of eight, I was tasked to care for my three half-siblings - from changing diapers to cleaning bottles. I thought that was how life should be as an older sister - caring for all the young ones and managing all the house chores. But I was forced to grow up too quickly.

Things at home were never the healthiest. I knew to create a different life for myself, and I needed to work hard and hustle. I started working at the age of 14 – tutoring, telemarketing, and more, so I could take care of myself. At the age of 16, I left home and continued to shuffle from home to home.

Small and scared to my first taste of success…

Not only was it challenging at "home", wherever home was at that time, but it was also challenging out in the world.

I was taken out of school a lot during my elementary school days. I attended six elementary schools, some of which were intercity schools, and was transferred out about eight times; this is all because we moved around a lot looking for a more affordable apartment to live in. I was always catching up with school work (barely most days), but I also had to constantly try to fit in with the rest of the kids as a minority Asian American. Most days, I kept my head down, kept to myself, and made sure I got home safe and alive. At school, it was common for non-Asians to beat up Asians, and as a result, it was also common for Asians to join a gang so they could unite and stand up for themselves. But, with determination to graduate and move forward, I remained focused.

I was lucky - I had Asian friends who were protective of me and aunts and uncles who provided a sense of safety and security throughout the rest of my younger days. In my family, I was the first to graduate college. I knew Finance was where I needed to create the life I wanted for myself, so I joined a prestigious global bank and earned a good income at the age of 21. That's when life finally started to feel somewhat normal.

Corporate burnout and depression…

There I was, living that hectic banking lifestyle in NYC, moving mindlessly from one thing to the next, hustling and trying to create a different life for myself through my career, assuming this was how I was supposed to live. But at 24 years of age, I found myself in a dark space. I worked long hours at the bank, constantly stressed, overworked, and overweight. At 5'2", I went from 110lbs to 150lbs. I was depressed, in a toxic relationship, and using alcohol and drugs as an outlet, which only worsened my mental and physical state.

Then I had a wake-up call that would change my life forever. I ended up unconscious in the hospital. No one knew whether I'd wake up. But I did, five days later, not knowing where I was or what I had done in the last six months. My short-term memory was gone. It took quite a bit of time to return to "normal" (whatever normal is!) This bottom led me to my next transition to a better way of being.

Yoga saved my life…

Shortly after the incident, I found yoga. Or perhaps yoga found me. It was the physical practice that initially attracted me to yoga. I started practicing once a week and slowly increased to two then three times. Eventually, it became a daily practice. Not only did I experience changes in my physical body, but my mental and spiritual state improved as well. I was eating healthier and at a healthier weight. I was more patient and grounded. I was more in tune with myself and those around me, which led to healthier and stronger relationships.

It's fair to say yoga dramatically transformed my life. I decided that yoga wouldn't just be part of my practice but my everyday life, both on and off the mat. And in 2008, I embarked on my yoga teaching journey.

My conscious choice to create pathways…

Like many women, I feared failing, not having financial stability, and falling back into old ways. So, I consciously chose to create pathways to continually and confidently lead the life I wanted. It took me another decade to step out of Finance entirely. Still somewhat fearful and recognizing the value of a business degree, I completed an MBA at Chicago Booth - one of the top business schools in the world. This experience allowed me to create connections across the globe, elevate my skillset, and network in a different space. With increased knowledge and new experiences, I felt confident that I could pivot into any number of careers and leverage the skills gained in my previous life. I could take chances, create pathways, pivot, find my purpose, and design the life I want to live.

How I can help you live the life you want...

I share this story because it is my truth. It is a part of me and how I got to this place I am at now. I came from darkness and pushed through to the light. I experienced rock bottom and was able to pull myself up through dedication, perseverance, and the support of my coaches/mentors along the way.

And now I help people find their purpose, reach their highest potential, and design the life they desire through the power of yoga, mentoring, and coaching – be it through my classes, workshops, retreats, and programs on and offline. In addition, I use my business background and experience to support emerging and established wellness businesses and entrepreneurs to grow and better serve their communities.

My story represents all of the potentials that each of us has inside. We have everything we need already within us. If you have the vision, you can find the direction. Through a lot of self-discovery work, self-development, coaching, and yoga, I've transformed my life not only once but multiple times, and I can honestly say I live my life purpose - and so can you.
